Why don’t we report results for the individual elements of Clarity Index?
Small shifts in individual responses - especially in small teams - can create misleading impressions of change, so only overall Clarity Index scores are reported to be more sure that the data reflects meaningful trends rather than chance fluctuations.
When reviewing and analysing data, we should understand that some of the differences that we observe, may not be significant. This is particularly important to recognise, with smaller groups, when data can appear to fluctuate significantly from just a minor change in an individual’s opinion.
Very few statements are required in the measurement of our Clarity Index. This is helpful, as it means that employees have fewer statements to respond to. However, this also means that fewer data points are collected. Typically, managers have relatively few direct reports; sometimes as few as three.
If we were to provide reporting on individual elements and statements within the Clarity Index, small changes such as an employee entering a response of agree to a statement, that they had previously responded slightly agree to in an earlier survey, could make it appear that some significant improvement had been made. Conversely it could look like a significant decline had occurred if results were the other way around. In either case, it could just be that one employee may have been borderline between the two responses and just happened to select different responses in each survey.
It is important to us that the data we provide is the most helpful and not be likely to mislead, and for this reason we don’t report data on the individual elements or statements in our Clarity Index. However, we are able to report overall Clarity Index scores, as we have many more data points – one for each respondent for each of the statements, and this produces greater confidence that the observed difference is much less likely to be down to chance.
