What Is Pearson Correlation Calculation?

The Pearson Correlation is calculated in your Workplace Insights by comparing pairs of scores from two variables across all the b-Heard survey respondents from your organisation.

Within the Best Companies survey, 24 statements contribute towards the 8 factors of workplace engagement, which consequently contribute towards the overall BCI.

Here is a chart showing overall factor scores. Factor scores are calculated by finding the mean score of each of the questions within that factor, then averaging these scores across the organisation. They are scored out of a maximum of 7.

The score on the y axis here is a measure of the size of the score, so My Team has the highest factor score and Fair Deal the lowest:

The Pearson Correlation is calculated by comparing pairs of scores from two variables across all the respondents from your organisation.

For example, each employee has a score for the Leadership factor and an overall engagement score (which is the average of all the factors). The correlation calculation compares these pairs of scores to determine the strength of the relationship between them. The calculation returns a value somewhere between -1 and +1 which is known as a correlation coefficient. This figure provides a measure of the strength and direction of the relationship.

Here is a chart showing factor correlations with overall engagement:

The x axis indicates which factor is being correlated with engagement and the y axis here shows the value of the correlation coefficient. This is the measure of each factor’s relationship with engagement, not a measure of engagement itself. Leadership has the highest correlation with engagement so how people feel about the leadership of the organisation strongly reflects how engaged they are overall. If they are happy in this area then they are likely to be engaged, however if they are not happy with this area then they are likely to be less engaged.
