What Is MC³, And It's Elements And Sub-Elements?

MC³ is a methodology designed to assess and enhance managerial engagement with teams, by identifying strong management practices and areas for growth.

What is MC³?

MC³ is a powerful methodology for measuring and improving the way that your managers engage with their teams. Based on your survey results, the unique MC³ framework helps you identify great management in your organisation, as well as opportunities for improvement. It enables you to have effective conversations with the right people and creates a positive platform on which to develop better recognition, understanding and support.

There are four elements in MC³ that combine to create an MC³ score for a manager – so long as they receive three or more responses from their direct reports. The elements represent four areas that have been proven to represent how effectively a manager can be measured against employee engagement.

What are the MC³ Elements?

The MC³ Elements are broken down as follows;

  • Considering:    Recognise what you are asking from people and ensure this is realistic and achievable. Support people in achieving their tasks. Recognise and reward a job well done

  • Caring:    Recognise people have a life outside of work: respect their time for family, friends and outside interests/hobbies. Show an interest in them as individuals and demonstrate care for their needs

  • Motivating:    Sell the direction and vision of the organisation and ensure others can see how their role impacts on the bigger picture

  • Conversing:    Open the channels for effective two-way communication. Share information in an open and honest way. Be open to receiving information from others

You can view your scores for these four elements by clicking on your overall MC³ score, or your company MC³ score in the overall chart in the MC³ portal. You can further investigate these elements by reviewing scores for the sub-elements that make them up. This will give you more insight into where and how you can improve your overall MC³ score.

What are the MC³ Sub-Elements?

Each of the elements in MC³ contains a number of sub-elements based on questions from the Best Companies survey. These sub-elements help you to identify areas that you can improve as a manager based on information provided by your direct reports when completing the Best Companies survey.

The MC³ sub-elements are broken down as follows:

  • Considering - Recognising:    Recognise what you are asking from people and ensure this is realistic and achievable. Recognise and reward a job well done

  • Considering - Supporting:   Consider the level of support individuals will need to achieve their tasks. Review this regularly, asking for feedback on how they feel things are going

  • Caring - Understanding:   Demonstrate understanding for individuals' workload and pressures in work. Respect employees' life outside of work: time for family, friends and outside interests/hobbies

  • Caring - Caring:   Show an interest in people as individuals and demonstrate care for their needs. Seek to understand their ambitions and encourage their potential

  • Motivating - Inspiring:    Sell the direction and vision of the organisation and ensure others have the drive and determination to deliver it

  • Motivating - Energising:   Provide clear guidelines as to what is expected of people. Ensure they can see how their role impacts on the bigger picture of the organisation

  • Conversing - Listening:    Be open to receiving information from others: asking questions and responding to feedback

  • Conversing - Informing:    Share information in an open and honest way and ensure fresh and relevant information is relayed in a timely fashion
