Setting up Custom Demographics

Custom Demographics allows engagement data to be analysed by alternative employee groupings within the Workplace Insight Tool.

Setting up Custom Demographics allows you to create bespoke categories for grouping your employee population. Survey responses from your employees will be attributed to the relevant demographics they are associated with. These demographics are available within the Workplace Insight Tool, providing you with deeper insights into employee engagement levels.  

For example, your ‘Employment Groups’ may not provide an organisation with site location data. In this instance, a custom demographic such as ‘Office Location’ could be created to allow for this additional report.  

How do I set these up? 

Custom Demographics can be defined during your survey set-up. Please submit a request with our client experience team at support@b.co.uk. Any proposed Custom Demographics will then be reviewed for approval with our Research and Compliance teams. 

You can then either be pre-populated within your employee data or included as questions in your survey. 

Things to consider 

Bespoke demographics must follow the same guidelines as all other demographics used in our surveys. The following should be taken into account: 


  • Sensitive items, such as protected characteristics, should be avoided. 
  • The demographic must provide relevant insight into workplace engagement. 
  • Engagement data will not be displayed for any group with fewer than five individuals. 
  • No individual should be placed in a group alone; in such cases, all data related to that demographic will be hidden to protect employee anonymity.
