How Do I Use The Correlated Questions Data To Improve?
The ‘Top 15’ correlated statements identified in Workplace Insights (WIT) are those that most significantly influence the overall engagement score, and so are powerful insights for improvements.
The ‘Top 15’ correlated statements identified in Workplace Insights following your survey are those that most significantly influence the overall engagement score (BCI).
Simply put, correlation measures how two variables change together (positively or negatively). For a positive change, one variable will tend to increase when the other increases; think of how an engine's power increase boosts speed.
These statements aren't necessarily the ‘best’ in the survey. They could score high or low in terms of engagement (on a scale of 1-7). The key is that they are most closely correlated with the overall score. Therefore, improving these statements will have the biggest positive impact on your overall score.
Correlation and Engagement
Correlation establishes a relationship or connection between two or more factors – in this case, specific statements and overall engagement. The strength of this correlation indicates our confidence that improving the question will enhance your BCI or engagement.
To identify your organisation's key drivers of engagement - those factors that, if improved, would have the greatest positive impact - we provide information on the 15 questions most strongly correlated with engagement.
Key Drivers of Engagement
Through over 25 years of research, Leadership and Management consistently top the charts as the factors that most positively impact (or negatively impact, if not performing well) employee engagement. These factors show the strongest correlations and significantly influence other factors such as Personal Growth and Wellbeing.
We measure correlation using a positive Pearson Correlation Scale, ranging from 0 to 1. The closer the score is to 1, the higher the correlation with engagement, i.e., a score of 1 indicates a perfect correlation, and a score of 0 shows no correlation at all. Any score over 0.3 is considered statistically significant. Essentially, if an employee feels positive in the areas identified by your top 15 questions, they are more likely to be highly engaged across all factors, and vice versa.
Focus Areas for Improvement
The 15 questions most strongly correlated with engagement are presented in ranked order, with the highest correlations at the top. These questions indicate areas to focus on in order to improve engagement. Two major categories that often appear in this section are:
- Managerial Engagement (My Manager)
- Organisational Clarity (Leadership/My Company)
These key strategic themes are areas where the Leadership and Management team have control and, as mentioned earlier, have strong relationships with several other factors. The more frequently items from these categories appear, the greater the need for focus on these areas.
Your ‘Top 15
Within your Top 15 questions, statements relating to both Managerial Engagement and Organisational Clarity are identified. These are colour-coded (in pink and grey) to help you quickly identify themes and see where you could influence positive change with the selected 15 statements.
Remember, these are the 15 statements that can have the biggest impact on your overall score if improved. However, if these statements were to negatively change, you would likely see a decline in your engagement score.
The statements are ordered by their correlation, with the most correlated at the top. You can see the correlation ‘score’ to the right.
When viewing as a Heatmap, these statements are ordered from highest to lowest by engagement score (on a 1-7 scale).
How to use this data to improve
We have some good news - ‘Threats’ that are identified within Workplace Insight Pro ‘SWOT analysis’ feature directly feeds from the correlation calculation. This is a powerful way of spotting those areas which not only are impacting greatly on the BCI score, but are also negative in terms of engagement score. This removes the effort of working out which statements will have the most impact vs. have the biggest opportunity for improvement.
For users without Workplace Insight Pro (Basic), we recommend selecting a few of the statements shown in your Top 15 that can be focused on in the immediate aftermath of receiving results, to work to positively impact the way employees feel towards them. These could support with some quick wins for you.
The top 15 correlated questions are generated for the overall company and can also be produced for an employment group as long as there are a minimum of 50 returned surveys. In cases where we have less than 50 responses the statistical accuracy is not as strong – therefore, you may find that for employment groups that fit into this category your data (and any data packs requested) revert to the organisations top 15.
